The Essence of Place: an outdoor installation.

The Essence of Place was an event which I organised for my RSPB artist residency. It consisted of a single-channel outdoor audiovisual installation and was screened at RSPB Loch Lomond on the 21st October 2017.

The Essence of Place is a short filmpoem, revealing the fragility of nature and the relationship between memory and place through poetry, soundscapes and images. The audiovisual installation presents the RSPB Loch Lomond nature reserve through seasonal changes, exploring the significance of place as a means to connect with memories and explore the relationship we have with nature and the landscape. The concept of this filmpoem questions how we can embody the landscape, and aims to connect our sense of place with the human body and consciousness. The result of this artist residency relates to my doctoral research project Experiencing the Filmpoem, which articulates the phenomenological potential of the production and exhibition of filmpoem. The evening consisted of a candlelit walk through woodland at the reserve. A pathway took the visitors to an open space where the film was viewed on a large screen. The screen was designed by artist Hugh Watt and the structure was built by myself and Hugh, on-site at Loch Lomond over 3 days. RSPB staff and volunteers helped to carry and hoist the 2.4 x 4 metre screen into position. The installation ran from 7:30-9:30pm and the visitors, who experienced the pilgrimage to the screen commented on how their senses were simultaneously heightened and quietened in preparation for the film screening. Nadin Mai, an independent researcher, was there to experience it. Read her excellent review here.
